Session 12:
Your Character is Your Destiny
“The shortest and surest way to live with honor in the world is to be in reality what we would appear to be; all human virtues increase and strengthen themselves by the practice and experience of them.” ~~ Socrates
Our last session of year one. Unfortunately due to weather issues, 3 of our members were unable to attend.
We discussed our reflections on the first year by answering the following:
Next up for discussion…
What are virtues?
Virtue… the ultimate positive habit
Your character is your destiny:
We got the good news that we would be continuing on in the program for year 2. We would have 4 group meetings and do a lot of the work on our own. Kim will email us assignments throughout the year.
Then she gave us take-home assignments to get us started…
After our group session and the individual sessions, we had a “graduation” ceremony and luncheon. Our chef, Dale, made a lunch for us and presented a graduation speech. A long-time dream of his had been to give a graduation speech so he did.
Bob Hager (our company president) and Vickie Roby (Human Resources) also attended our luncheon. Bob was pleased with the way the program had progressed during the first year and was excited about starting it with a new group in 2014.
One of our group had fulfilled a dream of learning how to do wood burning. She had presented Kim a plaque during our December meeting. Kim had then commissioned a plaque for each member of the group as a present for completing the first year!
Here I am receiving my plaque from Bob and Vickie.
I had advance notice about the graduation speech so I bought each participant a “Class of 2013” visor which was also given out.
Here’s our group on graduation day.
Bev, Kim, Wendy, Dale, Jane, Becky, Rene’ and Bob. Dan, Fernando and Alex were missing due to work issues at their locations. We lost one participant earlier in the year when he left Miller’s.
It’s been a wonderful learning experience and has forced me to dig deep into learning about myself. I’ve also learned that it is NEVER TOO LATE TO DREAM!!!
Next up… Continuing Your Success Journey.
Session 11:
Professional Mastery
“I visualized where I wanted to be, what kind of player I wanted to become. I knew exactly where I wanted to go, and I focused on getting there.” ~~ Michael Jordan
We started off the session with our discussion of our take-home from the spiritual mastery session. It was interesting to see what characters from books, movies or plays that we admire. I had chosen the character of “Angel” from the movie/Broadway play “Rent”. A character that is living life to the fullest even knowing that he will not be around long since he has full-blown AIDS. His belief in life seemed so spiritual to me.
The purpose of the Dream Manager program is not professional growth although it is an important part of our lives. Personal and professional successes are interconnected.
We broke into groups of 2 and discussed the following:
Kim listens to our discussions and uses what she hears to lead our group discussion. She singled me out because she heard me say I always wanted to be a teacher. She had me tie that to my current dream of leading the Core Financial Wellness program. Others also shared their former/current professional dreams.
Professional target dreams:
We then had to record our professional dreams we want to achieve in the next 12 months, 1 to 5 years, and 5+ years and what specific, measurable, and realistic things needed to accomplish these dreams along with who would be our partners to help us in these dreams.
At the end of the session, Kim told us to think about this question and write down our answers before our next session:
If you could speak openly and honestly with your manager, what would you tell him or her?
Other take-home included to complete the target dream action plans for our professional dreams.
Next session… Your Character Is Your Destiny!
My 5th individual session with Kim was in November.
I updated her on the progress of the Core Financial Wellness program that would be starting in January. We will be having approximately 8 to 10 participants.
We also talked about how I hoped that the group I’m in would be able to continue on with year 2 of the program as well as bringing in a new group of employees for year 1.
Kim definitely encourages us and pushes us to work harder on our dreams and I enjoy these individual discussions with her.
My 4th individual session with Kim was in September. Due to the holiday we had our meetings later in the month. So I had already presented my lunch ‘n learn before our meeting.
I updated Kim on how it went (awesome!) and the interest from fellow employees. We discussed how to move forward with the actual implementation of the program.
We also talked about my progress on some of my other dreams. Here’s a picture from the beginning of my presentation.
Another very productive meeting!
Sweet Digi Scrap’s newest kit is “Off The Path”, now available at The Digichick. I used it and a template from Scrapping With Liz’s Recyclables 26 collection to do this page about the butterfly garden Dennis and Allison are creating in their backyard. Involving the kids in the process is a complete learning experience.
Session 6:
Time and Energy
Again we started by reviewing our session 5 homework and a check-in on our scorecard.
Part of our activities included choosing a word from this list that best describes how we feel in our everyday life and another word that best describes how we feel when at work.
My words were Confident for work and Serene for Life.
Next we discussed the 4 levels of energy and where our selections put us in the levels.
We then talked about where our time goes by filling out a personal time inventory record. This is pretty much a chart of the 24 hours of the day broken down in 30 minute increments starting at midnight. We had to fill one out during our session of the previous day. Our homework included filling out another one with what we would consider our ideal time inventory. We had to consider where we would spend less time, where we would spend more time and do we take time to reflect and work on our dreams.
We also talked about what person, place or activity increases our energy and what person, place or activity decreases our energy.
Our homework included answering the following question: What are 3 things you can do this month to increase your energy? As stated above, we had to complete our ideal time inventory.
Next session… Physical Mastery!
Sweet Digi Scraps is back! Her newest release is now available at The DigiChick, Choose Happiness.
I used it to scrap my favorite roller coaster at Cedar Point. Because whenever I think of the Blue Streak, I smile! It is definitely an “oldie but goodie” in the roller coaster world. One of my fondest memories of Cedar Point is when a friend and I rode the Blue Streak 5 or 6 times in a row. We got off a ride and hopped right back on! It was in the evening and the park had pretty much cleared out after a late afternoon downpour.
I just love this ride…
… and Sweet Digi Scrap’s kit is great too! Template is by Scrapping With Liz.

We discussed my final plans for vacation. Since everything was under control with that, we started discussing my dream of bringing the Core Financial Wellness program to the company.
My steps for this dream consisted of:
I also planned on listening to my 2 sets of FPU CD’s as I drove the highways during my vacation. They are very motivating to me and would give me ideas of what to present in the luncheon.
Another energizing session!
Those words sum up how I felt the first time I saw each of my kids and held them in my hands. I had fallen in love with them from pictures, but holding them just completed me.
Sweet Digi Scrap’s “You Complete Me” kit and template were used for this layout.
I am very proud of the fact that my hometown is also the hometown of a real American hero, Neil Armstrong. Neil not only served in the military during the Korean War, he was the “first man to walk on the moon” in 1969.
Dad and Neil were in high school at the same time and the same age although Neil was a year ahead of Dad because of skipping a grade in school. Mom’s parents were very good friends of Neil’s parents and because of that we also knew them. When Mom and Dad built our house, we were living very close to Mr and Mrs Armstrong. In fact, I can see that house from my office window.
We were given a photo with Neil’s signature that has been proudly displayed in our home all these years. I decided it was time to scan and scrapbook the picture along with a picture I took of a drawing exhibited at the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum.
I used Sweet Digi Scrap’s kit “Comic Heroes”.
Christmas 2003.
I decided to get the kids a bunch of toys. For fun, I wrapped them up and put them under the tree. On Christmas Eve, Pepper got one of the gifts and brought it into the office where he proceeded to open it by himself! Such a smart little guy I’ve got!
They then had a great time tearing the paper off the rest of the toys on Christmas morning.
Kit is “Merry Kissmas” by Sweet Digi Scraps and a template from Scrapping With Liz’s Recyclables 22 collection.
Sweet Digi Scrap’s “Frosted Splendor” and a template from Scrapping With Liz’s Recyclables 22 collection were perfect to highlight the snow balls on the kids.
As a part of our group training in January, all participants were to write one dream on a card and put it on a dream board provided by Floyd Consulting. This is what we ended up with:
During our first couple sessions, the topic of dream boards for display in the company came up. Kim asked (or rather suggested strongly) that I put them together because of being so creative due to scrapbooking. Wendy volunteered to help me. Kim hoped that the 2 guys from Cleveland, and the 1 guy from Springfield would also do boards for their locations.
Wendy and I decided to do 2 boards:
We have 2 break rooms in the main plant so we decided to do 2 boards for each break room. We had the original board shown above so needed 3 more boards. Wendy was in charge of getting the boards.
I sat down at my computer and did a little scrapbooking and came up with the topics for the other boards:
I then pulled out an old laptop that I could use to run my Craft Robo and cut out the titles for the boards:
Wendy and I then put the titles and topics on the boards:
Wendy and I decided that if the Cleveland and Springfield guys didn’t mind (they didn’t!), we would do boards for them. So I proceeded to print out more topics and cut more titles. We glued them on the boards and had them ready for the guys the next time they were at the main plant.
Our maintenance man put the boards up for us. 2 are in the break room in the linen side of the plant. The decision was made to put the 2 boards for the uniform side of the plant on the wall outside the break room. They are hanging in between the men’s and women’s restrooms right by the water fountain so the employees can’t miss them! We’ve got blank dream cards on the boards so if an employee not involved in the program wants to fill one out, they can!
Linen Break Room:
Uniform Plant:
As the year went on, dreams were moved from the “What’s Your Dream?” boards to the “Living The Dream!” boards. At the end of the first year of the program the boards looked like this:
Now that a new 1st year class as well as a 2nd year for class has started, we hope that the dream boards will really start to fill up!
I met with Kim Radison for approximately 30 minutes after our group session. We went over my target dreams so she could get an idea of what I was looking to accomplish. It was also a get to know you a little better session.
We talked quite a bit about the planning for my vacation in May. We discussed the steps I had determined I needed to do for a successful vacation:
I would later add the following steps:
By our next meeting in May, I had successfully completed all of my steps. The WDW Magic Pass was purchased and in hand. I knew I would stay in Georgia close to the Florida border. I had also made arrangements to stop in Acworth, Georgia to stay with Christy and Craig on the 25th.
After our session, I felt very energized about the program and couldn’t wait to delve into it even more!
Session 2:
The Architecture of Dreams
During this session we discussed the points or ideas we highlighted in the reading material and did our scorecard check-in.
The scorecard check-in is always interesting. We have to determine if we feel we are “green” “yellow” or “red” in the areas of physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. “Green” is on track and working well. “Yellow” is okay…but not quite where I want to be. “Red” needs work and definitely not where I want to be. We have a couple participants that just cannot bring themselves to mark anything as “green”. So they developed their own color system. If they weren’t “green” but better than “yellow”, they became “lime green”. We had fun with that in each session that followed!
We also discussed some of our dreams and why we might be excited about them. A priority exercise was done to help us prioritize the steps to achieving our dreams. We were to list 5 things we wanted to do. For example, I listed 5 books I wanted to read. We then went down the list comparing #1 to #2 and deciding which was more important to us and putting a mark beside the one we chose. Next up was comparing #1 and #3, again checking which one was given preference. We continued on comparing #1 and #4, then #1 and #5, then #2 and #3, #2 and #4, #2 and #5, #3 and #4, #3 and #5 and last #4 and #5. At the end you will have 10 check marks. The one with the most check marks is where your priority is. This is how my 5 books priortized:
As you can see, a book about the Battle of Leyte Gulf is the most important for me. The reasoning behind that decision: my father’s brother was killed during that battle on the USS Birmingham. I never knew this uncle but my father thought a lot of him and I would like to know more about his last hours alive. A year later and I still haven’t read any of these books! I must remedy that!
We also discussed breaking down our target dreams into measurable steps to achieve them. It is one thing to say “I will declutter the house”. Makes it seem very overwhelming. But breaking it down into areas such as:
This makes it seem more doable. Baby steps will get you somewhere faster than trying to run a marathon the first time out!
Our homework, besides the reading, consisted of finalizing the action plans for our five target dreams. We were also encouraged to identify, cut out, and paste pictures of our target dreams in our dream book. Any other dreams would do also!
My first individual session was in March also. I’ll cover that in my next post!
I’ve always loved this picture and when I saw this kit, I knew I had to use it to highlight the picture of my impression of a teacher.
The kit is “Hit The Books” by Sweet Digi Scraps. The template is from Fiddle-Dee-Dee’s Sunbeam collection.
When I was researching for my trip last May, I ran across a website that listed free things to do off the beaten path of the interstate system. I checked out the stretch of I-95 from Rocky Mount, NC to Florida. I saw an article and some pictures of an old, burned out church in South Carolina. It was only 7 miles off the highway in Yemassee. I decided it would be a good place to stop and take some pictures.
It was AWESOME! The story behind the ruins is amazing also. The building was originally known as Prince William’s Parish Church. It was built between 1745 and 1753, then burned by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. In 1826 it was rebuilt. According to the sign placed in 1937 at the ruins, it was then burned in 1865 by Sherman’s men during their “march to the Sea” campaign. Since then another possible fate has come to light. A letter dated February 3, 1866 states that the church wasn’t burned out, just torn up inside but could be rebuilt. Evidently, the inside of the church was gutted by local people for materials to rebuild their homes that were burned by Sherman’s army. Either way, it was not rebuilt but is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
The ruins are surrounded by majestic oak trees and scattered graves with some of them dating in the 1990’s. The remains of Colonel William Bull who organized and funded the church in the 1740s and 1750s are within the ruins.
While I was there, I saw a couple with a photographer taking engagement pictures. It is so gorgeous that it is used for that quite often and also is available for weddings.
I used Sweet Digi Scrap’s kit “Like A Weed” and a template from Scrapping With Liz’s Recyclables 20 collection.
Sweet Digi Scrap’s kit “Shore Thing” was perfect for this picture I took in February 2010 at Punta Morena, Cozumel. I also used a template from Fiddle-Dee-Dee’s Sunbeam collection.
